The Algerian experience highlighted.
The carnage on the roads continues despite the many efforts made in recent years to stop this massacre. Road accidents have left 21 dead and 536 others injured in just 48 hours across several wilayas of the country, according to a report made public yesterday by the Civil Protection services.
The heaviest toll was recorded in the wilaya of Skikda, with 4 dead and 2 injured, following a collision between 3 light vehicles, which occurred on the RN 44, commune of Azzaba, notes the same source. These tragic events have brought back the debate on the phenomenon of road accidents, which records high rates despite the awareness campaigns regularly conducted by the competent authorities.
Among the factors that contributed to these road accidents, the head of the National Delegation for Road Safety (DNSR), Mr. Naït El Hocine, cited the failure of motorcyclists to comply with safety measures, including wearing helmets, as well as dangerous overtaking on highways and roads with heavy traffic, thus causing many traffic accidents. In this regard, he reaffirmed the importance of training and the participation of driving schools in the State’s efforts to reduce road accidents and their consequences.
According to the figures revealed by Mr. Naït El Hocine, 11,162 road accidents, resulting in 1,446 deaths and 14,852 injuries, were recorded between January and May 2024. An increase was recorded in the number of accidents (+7.10%) and the number of deaths (+2.99%) compared to the same period in 2023.
The wilaya of Oran comes first in terms of the number of accidents and victims, with 512 accidents and 69 deaths, followed by Algiers with 496 accidents and 65 deaths. Young people were responsible for no less than 4,252 accidents (30%) and holders of a driving license of less than five years caused 5,767 accidents (41.92%), according to the speaker.
Furthermore, Civil Protection elements intervened to provide emergency care to 14 people poisoned by carbon monoxide emanating from water heaters in the wilayas of Algiers (5 people), Tipasa (6) and Constantine (3 people).
Concerning the beach surveillance system, the Civil Protection units carried out 2003 interventions to rescue 1,445 people from drowning, of whom 413 were treated on site and 123 others were evacuated to hospitals. However, the Civil Protection deplored the death of 5 people by drowning in the wilayas of Mostaganem, Oran, Tipasa and Tlemcen.
The forest, scrubland, harvest and palm grove fire fighting system proceeded, during the same period, to extinguish 48 fires across several wilayas of the country, the press release added.
