Israel to Ban Fiber-Optic and SIM-Controlled Drones Amid Growing Security Threats
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans to impose a six-month ban on drones controlled by fiber-optic cables or cellular networks, citing intelligence warnings and increasing security threats.
The order, set to be signed Sunday, targets drones that use fiber-optic guidance or SIM cards instead of conventional radio signals.
Officials say the move follows concerns over potential drone attacks, assassination attempts against senior officials, espionage, smuggling, and criminal activity.
The restrictions will include exemptions for security agencies and previously authorized drones, with a special committee reviewing additional requests.
Approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz, the ban is part of a broader effort to counter drone threats, including tighter import controls and additional regulations.
