NATO’s largest naval exercise commences in Romania with 12 allies, partner countries.
The exercise, named Sea Shield 24, is the second time the naval drill has been held, with the first occurring in 2015. The Black Sea has been a crucial theater of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, and the Danube River has emerged as an important alternative transit route in response to the Russian naval presence in the sea.
More than 2,200 military personnel and 135 ships, aircraft and vehicles from 12 member countries and partners of the Alliance will take part in them.
The opening ceremony took place in the port of Constanta ( pictured left ).
Troops and military equipment from Bulgaria, France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Turkiye, the United States and Romania are taking part in the exercises.
