🇬🇧According to Politico, “Biden administration officials are increasingly concerned that rogue Russian soldiers in Niger will take steps to antagonize US troops in the country, forcing the United States to respond.”
He worries that Russians stationed at the same Niamey air base as U.S. troops will “engage in disruptive behavior, such as driving aggressively or harassing U.S. troops at checkpoints.”
US intelligence however explained that Russian soldiers “do not pose an immediate threat to US troops,” although “small hostile encounters would increase the risk of a confrontation that could result in an exchange of fire.”
A US Defense Department official says there are between 60 and 100 Russians in Niamey, most of them former PMC Wagner.
While US troops will be expelled from Niger, although without a specific date, Russian forces have been deployed in the capital in April to train and advise the Nigerien armed forces, including in air defense tasks.
Washington also fears that the Russians could try to gather intelligence on American capabilities and seize American complexes and equipment when American troops withdraw.
