The United Nations General Assembly on Friday supported Palestine’s request for full membership of the Organization (UN).
The UN GA recognizes Palestine as eligible for full membership and refers the request, presented on behalf of the Arab Group, to the UN Security Council to “favourably review the matter”.
The resolution, which considers that the Palestinians should “be admitted as members of the Organization” and grants them some additional rights as observers, received 143 votes for, 9 against and 25 abstentions.
This resolution recognizes that Palestine meets the conditions required to join it. An application to join the UN as a full member must first be approved by the 15 members of the Security Council, then by the General Assembly.
