Thirteen of Algeria’s universities are now among the best in the world, according to one of the world university rankings, namely Webometrics. Among these are the University of the Mentouri Brothers in Constantine, the USTHB in Algiers (Houari Boumediène University of Science and Technology), and that of Abou Bakr Belkaid in Tlemcen.
This progress is the result of the remarkable work of one of the commissions set up by the minister of the sector, namely the one responsible for giving more visibility to our universities internationally. This was clarified yesterday by Professor Mohamed Bouhicha, Director General of Scientific Research at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, noting that they run their websites which are constantly updated and supplied with programs and publications in English. He clarified, in this wake, that the ranking of universities obeys in most cases commercial aims, hence the importance of this ranking because it improves the international attractiveness of our universities.
Thus, Mr. Bouhicha made it known, during his intervention on the airwaves of Channel III of the National Radio, that “another classification, THE Young (the Times Higher Education)”, highlights for its part that the number of ranked Algerian universities increased from 11 to 21 between 2023 and 2024.
Returning to the role of the special committee on the visibility of universities which was set up by the Minister of Higher Education, the speaker specified that its mission is to encourage universities to improve their websites and to publish their scientific work in English, in order to be competitive on the international scene. This visibility, he continued, will have a direct impact on the position of the university as well as for researchers.
Namely, “Webometrics” is the largest global university evaluation system, covering more than 20,000 institutions and publishing 16,000 of them. Its objective is to improve the presence of higher education and research institutions online, and to promote the publication of peer-reviewed scientific articles. This biannual assessment is based on the performance of universities across their websites, taking into account criteria such as research citation and overall impact.
