In a speech delivered Friday in Sorrento (Italy), during the work of the 3e edition of the International Forum “Towards the South: the European strategy for a new geopolitical, economic and socio-cultural season in the Mediterranean”, Mr. Arkab specified that this project will make a great contribution to Europe’s natural gas supplies, and will thus strengthen energy security of the northern shore of the Mediterranean, and will also support the socio-economic development of transit countries.
On the other hand, Mr. Arkab indicated that Algeria will take part in the strategic debate with its European partners on the creation of the Southern Corridor H2, to transport renewable hydrogen produced in Algeria to Germany, via Tunisia, ‘Italy and Austria’.
At the same time, the minister affirmed that this “megaproject” requires the establishment of solid partnerships between the public and private sectors, noting that this cooperation will make it possible to “mobilize the large partnership investments required for the development of production infrastructures, storage and transport of hydrogen.
In the same context, Mr. Arkab highlighted Algeria’s determination to become “the main supplier in the field of hydrogen”, given the enormous capacities and advantages it has allowing it to occupy a place pioneer in this field, emphasizing the importance of the national energy model currently being prepared.
At the regional level, Mr. Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s desire to establish “a solid and effective regional partnership” and to become “an energy hub in the region and an axis of energy exchange thanks to numerous projects including the electrical connection and the H2 Southern Corridor between Algeria and Europe capable of boosting the energy transition and supporting common development in the Mediterranean basin and Europe”, underlining Algeria’s attachment to actively participating international initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas and methane emissions.
The Minister of Energy also mentioned one of Algeria’s flagship projects, namely the development of the electrical interconnection between the North and the South of the Mediterranean, for which an envelope of 3 billion dollars has been allocated. been allocated. The project, explains Mr. Arkab, is “of vital importance for the country and the region”, adding that it is able to strengthen renewable energies in particular, by improving local electrical connections, thus opening new perspectives for the export of clean electricity to Europe.
This project, continues the minister, “will allow our African neighbors to obtain supplies within the framework of the spirit of solidarity and regional cooperation”, displaying Algeria’s willingness to “facilitate the passage of electricity from the countries of the northern shore of the Mediterranean to African countries. The initiative will enable the supply of clean and reliable electricity to African countries, thus contributing to their socio-economic development, according to the minister.
