To strengthen the resistance of buildings

URBAN PLANNING New Algerian seismic rules (RPA)

The Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City, Mohamed Tarek Belaaribi, announced, yesterday Wednesday in Algiers, the publication of new Algerian seismic rules (RPA 2024), ensuring that this new system was developed by a specialized technical team, composed of more than 60 Algerian academics, researchers, technicians and experts established abroad.
“Earthquakes remain one of the most dangerous disasters, due to their sudden nature,” he said.
Speaking during an information day on the risks of earthquakes ”Parcours et Défis”, organized at the conference room of the AADL Agency in Saïd Hamdine (Algiers), the Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City announced that the adoption of the said Algerian seismic rules (RPA 2024) will enable the strengthening of the resistance of buildings to earthquakes and will enable the achievement of the objectives of the public authorities.
“Through the updating of this system, we will be able to integrate all the new seismic protection techniques and new construction systems,” he indicated.
It was decided, said Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, to impose the Algerian seismic rules (RPA) in all construction operations, as well as to ensure their application through the construction technique control bodies (CTC), and, he continued, to obligatorily apply the decisions relating to the urban planning framework, and the generalization of the use of technology such as the integration of seismic systems to increase the safety of buildings.
We cannot, added Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, forget the earthquake that occurred on October 10, 1980 near the town of El Asnam (today Chlef), with an intensity of 7.3 on the Richter scale, which caused the death of 2,278 people.
“For this reason, public authorities have adopted policies that aim to reduce the danger of earthquakes, through the development of a preventive plan, the strengthening of good governance and the improvement of investments,” noted the Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City.
Finally, the Minister of Housing reported the development of an application based on artificial intelligence, named in the name of ”Dima”, which helps, observed Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, to obtain accurate and instantaneous maps damages.
