The Movement for the Society of Peace (MSP) nominated its president Abdelali Hassani Chérif this Friday evening as a candidate for the presidential election on September 7, the Young Independent learned from a source within the Islamist party.
The choice of Hassani took place during an extraordinary session of the Advisory Council held on May 24 and 25 at the exhibition center (SAFEX) in Algiers. The session was devoted to examining the position of the party founded on December 6, 1990 by the late Mahfoudh Nahnah, with regard to the anticipated presidential election decided last March by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Hassani succeeded Abderrezak Makri at the head of the movement in March 2023 when he was unknown on the Algerian political scene.
To date, Leila Assoul and Belkacem Sahli have announced their intentions to run as candidates in the presidential race while the El Bina movement led by Abdelkader Bengrina designated President Tebboune as its candidate for a second term this Friday.
