A few days before the convening of the electoral body and the start of the process which will lead Algerians to the polls for the anticipated presidential election on September 7, the stage is already set. Even the actors in these games are beginning to settle and empty the political scene.
After Zoubida Assoul of the Union for Change and Progress, Louiza Hanoune of the Workers’ Party, Belkacem Sahli, candidate of a coalition of seven small parties, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif of the Society Movement for Peace and, in all likelihood , Youcef Aouchiche of the Socialist Forces Front, only one name remains to complete the probable list of candidates.
It is certainly Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the Republic, at the end of his mandate and who has not yet revealed his intentions. However, all the clues are revealing because the creation of an alliance formed among the largest parties in the country is already an unmistakable sign. The National Liberation Front party, the National Democratic Rally, the El Moustakbel Front and the El Bina Movement quickly decided on a fundamental point: that of choosing a single and consensual candidate. Their choice is obvious: it is Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Bengrina was the first to announce the color by calling on the outgoing President to run for a second term. In a speech given on the occasion of the holding of an extraordinary majliss echoura of this moderate Islamist party, Mr. Bengrina openly designated Abdelmadjid Tebboune as the candidate on whom his party will bet during the anticipated presidential election.
“After an in-depth examination of the conclusions of the consultations undertaken by the party with activists, the elite, political, social and civil society actors, and taking into account the weight of the responsibilities of which it is capable, the movement has decided to apply Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” announced Abdelkader Bengrina. “He will be the horse we will bet on with all those who share the same approach,” he said.
It will be followed the next day by the RND and certainly later by the FLN and El-Moustakbel, as well as by other smaller groups, such as El-Karama.
The timing of such an announcement is not accidental since it comes two days after an unprecedented meeting which brought together 27 political parties with the Head of State. Already anticipating the outcome of this presidential election, this coalition is already considered as the future presidential alliance, the one which will form the post-election government. Because it is she who will constitute the popular base of support for candidate Tebboune who, undoubtedly, should not refuse such an offer of support coming from the parties which hold the absolute majority in all state institutions, both in the two Parliamentary Chambers (APN and Council of the Nation) as well as in the municipal and wilaya Popular Assemblies.
These big guns monopolize almost 80% of the seats in these Popular Assemblies. In addition, the National Coordination of Civil Society (CNSC), made up of a dense network of associations throughout the national territory, also made its choice, calling on Tebboune to run for a second term.
During a meeting of its offices in the Central region, the president of the CNSC, Abdelhafid Bessaleh, affirmed, in a statement to Young Independentthat the CNSC has always supported President Tebboune since his election in 2019, and today, he added, it is logical, given the important achievements accomplished by the head of state during his first term, that the coordination gives him its support for a second term.
“President Tebboune is the one and only choice for the CNSC, he is the candidate of the people and civil society. Thanks to its work and its program during the first mandate, Algeria has regained its place in the global political scene and at the national level. Mr. Tebboune kept all his 54 commitments to the people. We call on him to run for a second term in order to continue the process of building a new Algeria,” he declared.
The rallying or convergence of all these movements towards a single choice is a weighty political and electoral argument. Such a political force will be a solid electoral base that candidate Tebboune could not neglect because, with all this support, it is already the guarantee of a flawless electoral victory and with a rate which would be close to 80%.
We still have to wait for the response from the outgoing President and his official announcement of candidacy, which will certainly not take long.
