Algeria distinguished itself during the awards ceremony of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), which was held in Geneva on Tuesday evening, in the presence of the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi Triki.
The young Nassim Louchali from the Digital Heritage and Arts Documentation Center of Sétif, which is part of the Digital Society of Technology and Science of the wilaya of Sétif, was ranked first in the category “Cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and local content”. The winner was honored by the Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin.
In addition, three other Algerian projects also reached the final of the organized competition. These are the projects of the National Operating Agency, the National Electricity and Gas Company (Sonelgaz) and an independent research team. The Algerian projects selected for competitions have thus obtained very satisfactory results on a global scale.
It should be noted that the WSIS Awards competition was developed in response to requests from WSIS stakeholders to create an effective mechanism to evaluate projects and activities that harness the power of information and communication technologies (ICT) to advance sustainable development.
Since its creation, the SMSI Awards competition has attracted more than 300,000 candidates. The WSIS Awards are the unique global platform to identify and showcase success stories in implementing the WSIS Action Lines and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Furthermore, Mr. Bibi Triki presented, during his participation in the WSIS, Algeria’s strategy in terms of accelerating the development of its telecommunications infrastructure, according to the same source. He highlighted the main strategic axes adopted by Algeria in this direction, with a view to strengthening digital inclusion and achieving equitable socio-economic development, reflected by the indicators recorded in recent years.
In this context, the minister stressed that Algeria has worked to enable all of its citizens to benefit, in an equitable manner, from the advantages offered by telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICT). , and this by ensuring the availability of these technologies, everywhere and for everyone, but also at a reasonable cost. “The strong political will aimed at generalizing the diffusion of this technology constitutes the backbone of the strategy outlined, which gave birth to an action plan whose implementation is currently being evaluated, and made it possible to achieve a qualitative leap in terms of different indicators,” said the minister.
Among the various indicators, Mr. Bibi Triki notably cited the achievement of a fixed internet access rate of 65% while it was at 40% at the start of 2020, as well as the six-fold increase in international bandwidth over the past four years.
