A 27-year-old young man died by drowning last week at Melbou beach, east coast of the wilaya of Béjaïa.
This is the first death by drowning recorded this year even though the summer season has not, of course, started.
“The young man who is from El-Eulma wilaya of Sétif died around 3:53 p.m., at Tassift El-Marsa beach,” said the person in charge of the civil protection communications unit of the wilaya of Béjaïa. The victim’s body was recovered by the local firefighters and was then evacuated to the morgue of the region’s hospital.
This first drowning is recorded at a time when the 35 in the wilaya of Béjaïa authorized for swimming this year are not yet monitored. The operational beach surveillance system will be implemented this Saturday by civil protection.
To do this, the civil protection of the wilaya of Béjaïa recruited 626 swimming supervisors for the entire month of June. In addition, 06 ambulances, 05 inflatable boats and a doctor are also mobilized to carry out relief and rescue operations.
This system will be reinforced by human and material resources during the months of July and August, months during which a large influx of summer visitors is often recorded in the region.
