L’Algérie a franchi «de grands pas» en matière de protection des droits de l’enfant

Algeria has taken “big steps” in protecting children’s rights

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) affirmed, Saturday, that Algeria had taken great steps in the protection and promotion of children’s rights, thanks to the great efforts made to guarantee education compulsory and free, medical care and legal protection for this category.
In a press release made public on the occasion of World Children’s Day (June 1), the Council said it was satisfied with the “great efforts tirelessly deployed by the Algerian State, for the benefit of the child, particularly for guarantee free and compulsory education in all school cycles, and absorb school dropouts in second and third cycles through vocational training and apprenticeship.
The Council also welcomed the decline in infant mortality, describing it as an “achievement” in terms of preserving the life of the child, as well as in terms of medical care, as evidenced by “all the reports of the relevant UN mechanisms”.
At the same time, the Council welcomed the Algerian legislator “anxious to ensure complete legal protection for the child”, in particular through the Constitution, from 1963 until 2020, and the executive policies which have resulted since then. ‘independence’, noting that Algeria had taken “great strides in the protection and promotion of children, in particular through the constitutionalization of a central principle in article 71, having strengthened the rights of the child by the consecration of its supreme interest”.
According to the CNDH, Algerian legislation ensures “the legal protection of children from all kinds of violence and danger, citing, in this regard, the adjustment of sentences for minors, their physical separation from adults in penitentiary establishments, the creation of centers for the re-education and integration of minors while toughening the sentences imposed on perpetrators of crimes against children.”
