“The specialization of commercial ports by category to reduce congestion as much as possible”

The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, ordered, during the meeting of the Council of Ministers which he chaired the day before yesterday, the Government to design a comprehensive approach for a new port management strategy, to be submitted to the Council. ministers as soon as possible. An instruction which was given in order to resolve the problem of port congestion which had experienced “in October 2023 a peak occupancy rate of 85%”, according to the Secretary General at the Ministry of Transport, Mr. Djamel Eddine Abdelghani Dridi, who indicated that in March 2024 the rate reached 53% thanks to the actions undertaken.
Among these actions he highlighted the establishment of an interministerial committee under the chairmanship of the Minister of Transport and which is responsible for remedying this problem.
In this regard, he underlined during his intervention on Channel III of the National Radio that “the decongestion of our ten commercial ports as quickly as possible, to achieve more rational management of maritime transport of goods, has become neither more nor less than an imperative emergency in view of the excessively long delays in unloading ships.
The speaker underlined that the instruction given by the President of the Republic for a new vision of port management aims at this highly strategic objective because, he continued, the delay in unloading ships obviously has an astronomical financial cost. on the national economy. “Today, we are thinking about the specialization of our ports (by category of goods, editor’s note)”, the aim being to decongest the ports as much as possible, “a question discussed the day before yesterday in a select committee with the general directors of the ports” , declared Mr. Djamel Eddine Abdelghani Dridi.
Still in the measures taken to reduce the port passage times of imported goods, the President ordered the Minister of Transport to redouble vigilance and caution in the face of all forms of manipulation, in particular the policy of procrastination with regard to the control of containers, emphasizing the imperative to respect unloading deadlines by strengthening capacities and control systems, capable of freeing up space at dry ports. In addition, the President of the Republic gave instructions to set up a coordination mechanism to manage the pressure resulting from stranded waiting times at the ports, so as to reduce them to a duration maximum of 24 hours. The President also ordered to reduce the pressure on the port of Algiers, in concert with commercial maritime agencies, by directing part of the maritime traffic of commercial ships to all ports of the country.
