The switch establishing the interoperability of mobile payments, “Switch mobile”, was launched the day before yesterday in Algiers, which allows customers of banks active on the national scene, as well as customers of Algérie Poste, to carry out transactions interbank payment and transfer from account to account, instantly using the QR code. The launching ceremony of this service, previously reserved for two banks and Algérie Poste and applied only between customers of the same financial institution, took place under the supervision of the Minister of Finance, Laaziz Faid, of the Post and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi Triki, Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid.
The launch ceremony of this service was also attended by the High Commissioner for Digitization Ms. Meriem Benmouloud, the Governor of the Bank of Algeria (BA) Mr. Salah Eddine Taleb and officials from the banking sector as well as numerous executives of State.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Finance affirmed that this service was likely to create “a real digital revolution” in the field of finance and banking, by offering citizens “fast, convenient and secure digital services” . He thus underlined that mobile payment services “are the culmination of a work plan and a careful strategy launched by the public authorities, as part of the application of the provisions of the monetary and banking law in its component inherent to the development and implementation of the national electronic payment strategy, as part of an approach aimed at strengthening financial inclusion in Algeria.
For his part, the Minister of Post and Telecommunications affirmed that the launch of this service constituted “a qualitative leap” for e-payment in Algeria which will strengthen the efficiency and security of financial transactions, stressing the importance infrastructures now guaranteed by the telecommunications sector in Algeria, faced with the increase in the number of “Eddahabia” cards from Algeria-post estimated at 13 million units, compared to only 6 million in 2020.
For his part, the Governor of the Bank of Algeria welcomed the launch of this new service and its extension, stressing that it is another step in the diversification of means of e-payment via mobile phone, making it easy to settle various payments and make transfers quickly and conveniently for citizens, with instant transfer of the transaction value to the merchant.
