The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reassured breeders yesterday Saturday, following the appearance of a few outbreaks of bovine “contagious lumpy skin disease” in a few wilayas, that the situation is “under control” and that all means of prevention and control have been mobilized.
“The ministry reassures breeders that the health situation is under control and that all necessary means of prevention and control are mobilized in order to support professionals and avoid the spread of the disease in our livestock,” indicates a press release from the ministry. .
The ministry has thus initiated “all necessary health measures, in order to contain the disease and avoid its spread”, while the procedures for acquiring the vaccine against this disease have already been initiated at the Pasteur Institute in order to strengthen the prevention and control system, according to the press release.
And since it is a “vector-borne” disease where the virus spreads in the insect population, extensive disinfestation is “strongly recommended and must be carried out in a permanent and controlled manner”.
It is also recommended, continues the ministry, the strict application of measures prohibiting the movement of animals from infected farms, the isolation of sick animals and the disinfection of premises and tools.
In case of suspicion, breeders should contact the nearest veterinarian, recommends the ministry.
Contagious bovine “lumpy skin disease” is a viral disease that only affects cattle and is not transmissible to humans. It is transmitted mainly by vectors (biting insects) and is characterized in particular by fever and nodules of various sizes on the animal’s skin, the press release specifies.
