26 prétendants dans la course – Le Jeune Indépendant

The president of the Independent National Authority for Elections (ANIE), Mohamed Charfi, affirmed this Sunday in Algiers that 26 candidates withdrew subscription forms and that more than two and a half million documents for sponsorship were distributed to contenders in the race for the presidential election on September 7.

During a press conference, Mr. Charfi recalled the main dates of the process, stressing that from the announcement of the convocation of the electoral body, candidates have until July 18 at midnight to submit their forms. The examination of these files by ANIE will end on July 28 but the Constitutional Court will have one week to examine possible appeals, i.e. August 3.

According to Mr. Charfi, the Independent Electoral Authority has taken all measures and mobilized all human and material resources in order to prepare, in the best conditions, the presidential election.

Speaking on the new organizational arrangements, the president of the body affirmed that the operation of validating the signatures of the forms will be marked by the mobilization of a large number of notaries and bailiffs, so that this operation is completed within the legally required time frame. To this end, the offices responsible for this operation will be open even on Fridays and public holidays, and the opening hours are now set from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., an extension of two hours.

These facilitations come just after the criticisms made by some political parties, who recently contacted ANIE about the progress of the operation to collect the voter signatures necessary for the submission of candidacy files. It seems that Mr. Charfi responded favorably to the candidates’ grievances, by making up for the delays recorded.

The president of ANIE also returned to the operation to revise the electoral lists, mentioning the issuance of voting cards and registration numbers to new registered voters or to those who have changed their place of residence.

Finally, the president of ANIE indicated that this subscription process is not simple and requires the mobilization of significant resources, particularly in terms of organizational capacities and human resources.

He added that the body he chairs is not only working to ensure the success of the ballot but to prepare well for the election, thanks to the experience acquired by ANIE and in view of its human and logistics.
