The National Agricultural Mutual Fund (CNMA) organized, the day before yesterday in Algiers, a seminar on the theme of “Insurance and management of risks linked to strategic storage installations – case of silos”. The objective of this seminar is to better inform and raise awareness on better management of risks linked to silos, indicated a press release from the mutuality specifying that this meeting, organized at the National Army Circle of Beni-Messous, given the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Also present were directors general of the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC) and the CNMA, as well as executives from the Cereals and Pulses Cooperatives (CCLS) and the mutuality.
The meeting aimed to “inform and raise awareness about the current state of storage infrastructure and to discuss preventive measures against the multiple breakdowns and damages that could affect these buildings and transported goods.” The aim is to “implement adequate insurance conditions for better management of risks linked to silos”, according to the CNMA.
Ensuring that grain storage silos played a strategic and vital role in the conservation of grains in sufficient quantities, capable of responding to fluctuations in demand and agricultural production, the CNMA also noted that these infrastructures could present, however, major environmental and industrial risks.
In this regard, she cited dust explosions, fires, noise pollution, water pollution, air contamination, and malicious acts.
Noting that Algeria is located in a seismically active region, the mutuality observed that “we must build silos according to rigorous anti-seismic standards”, warning against the consequences of earthquakes which can cause “cracks and collapses , leading to grain losses.
It also recommended installing automatic detection and extinguishing systems and training employees in fire safety procedures as well as organizing regular exercises to ensure their preparedness.
Concerning the risks of explosion, she recommended the installation of adequate ventilation, the control of dust levels and the use of non-flammable materials which are essential.
