Towards the local manufacture of reverse osmosis membranes

Seawater desalination

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, indicated, the day before yesterday Monday in Algiers, that Algeria is moving towards the local production of reverse osmosis membranes, used in the desalination of seawater .
In a speech delivered at the opening of a parliamentary day on “seawater desalination as a strategic option for the State… achievements and challenges”, the minister said that the Algerian company of the energy (Algerian Energy Company – AEC), a subsidiary of Sonatrach, “has embarked on talks with several international companies specializing in the manufacturing and production of inputs and equipment for desalination stations”, stressing that “at the beginning of the current year, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the AEC and the German PEL group specializing in the manufacture of semi-permeable membranes, as part of a win-win partnership”.
The agreement signed for the production of these membranes in Algeria aims to reduce the import bill, stimulate local industry and create jobs, he explained.
In the same vein, the minister affirmed that seawater desalination faces the challenge of high production costs, due to the volume of electricity consumption by these plants.
