10 children lose a leg in Gaza every day
Since the Zionist attacks last October:
The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said that 10 children lose a leg or two in Gaza on average every day since the Zionist attacks began last October, also leading to a unprecedented humanitarian disaster in Gaza. The UN Security Council held its annual public debate yesterday on children and armed conflict. The Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Virginia Gamba, presented the annual report of the Secretary-General on children and armed conflict, dated 3 June. Presentations are also expected from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Deputy Director General for Programs, Ted Chaiban, and a civil society representative from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) responsible for children.
The annual report of the Secretary-General covers the period January to December 2023 and provides information on the six grave violations committed against children in situations on the agenda of the Council on Children and Armed Conflict. These include the recruitment and use of children, their killing or mutilation, kidnapping, rape and other forms of sexual violence, attacks on schools and hospitals and the denial of access to humanitarian aid. Among the situations likely to be raised during the debate on children and armed conflict, briefers and members of the Council are likely to highlight trends in violations against children. The intensification of Zionist hostilities in the occupied Palestinian territories, in particular in the Gaza Strip, since October 2023 against civilians, the majority of whom are women and children, should also give rise to serious concern. The United Nations has verified numerous serious violations against Palestinian children.
In the annexes to his report, the Secretary General cites the case of Palestinian children who were martyred or mutilated following the barbaric attacks carried out by the Zionist armed forces, who also attacked schools and hospitals. According to the meeting’s concept note, this year’s public debate also focused on the denial of humanitarian access to children, including in the Palestinian enclave.
For its part, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society affirmed yesterday that thousands of inhabitants of the Gaza Strip are at risk of dying of hunger. In a statement carried by the Wafa news agency, the Company called for the need to deliver humanitarian aid to the northern areas of the Gaza Strip and lift the siege, mentioning that “air humanitarian aid cannot did not meet the needs necessary to reduce hunger rates. She also called for “the opening of crossing points and the delivery of aid to all areas of the Gaza Strip,” stressing that “the occupation deliberately and continually targets relief teams.”
