Algeria adopts the principle of rationalization of imports

The Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, affirmed that Algeria had not stopped imports, but had, rather, adopted the principle of rationalizing its imports in parallel with the evolution of national production , stressing that “Algeria is a sovereign country” and “does not tolerate diktat”.
The minister indicated, in an interview given to Algerian Television, on the sidelines of the opening of the 55th International Fair of Algiers (June 24-29), with the participation of nearly 700 national and foreign exhibitors, that “the ‘Algeria has not stopped imports, but what we produce, we will not import,’ specifying that ‘Our annual imports are estimated at 45 billion USD, including more than 22 billion USD coming from the European Union,’ he said, stressing that “Algeria has rationalized the importation and has not stopped it, which would be inconceivable”.
Citing the self-sufficiency achieved by Algeria this year in wheat, the minister explained that it will allow the country to save 1.2 billion USD and reduce the import bill in this area.
