Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Rachid Bladehane, reiterated on Friday Algeria’s “firm” commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights.

“My delegation takes note of the recommendations made by the Special Rapporteur in his report and reiterates Algeria’s firm commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights at all levels,” he said. declared.
Mr. Bladehane particularly stressed Algeria’s “firm commitment” to open dialogue and cooperation with United Nations mechanisms, as evidenced by Mr. Voule’s “fruitful” discussions during his visit to the country.
“Our active participation in these exchanges demonstrates our desire to work together to promote the human rights situation in Algeria,” he noted.
Mr. Bladehane also wanted to highlight “the crucial importance of contributions from civil society and stakeholders based in Algeria, through calls for contributions regarding country visits by United Nations mandate holders.”
This close cooperation between the government and civil society in Algeria, he continued, “is manifested by initiatives such as the creation of the National Observatory of Civil Society which attest to our commitment to open and inclusive dialogue”, noting that “this collaboration strengthens our approach towards participatory and transparent governance”.
Regarding freedom of association and civil society, Mr. Bladehane was keen to stress that “freedom of association is fully exercised in accordance with the law and international standards.”
“The restrictions mentioned in the report are necessary to prevent the financing of terrorism and guarantee the autonomy of associations.
In addition, the participation of civil society in the fight against corruption is encouraged without discrimination,” he said. Regarding religious associations, the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office in Geneva indicated that “freedom of worship is guaranteed by the Constitution and is exercised in accordance with the law,” recalling that “no file concerning the followers mentioned in the report has been filed with the Ministry of the Interior” and that “the closures of unauthorized places of worship were carried out for reasons of security and compliance with standards with measures taken to support religious organizations.”
Regarding the classification of terrorist organizations, Mr. Bladehane said that the latter is “in accordance with Executive Decree No. 21-384/2021 as well as the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”
Regarding the right to unionize and political freedoms in Algeria, he said it is important to clarify that “this right is fully recognized and protected by the Constitution and the law in force.”
Regarding public meetings and demonstrations, he indicated that “Algerian legislation clearly defines the conditions for their holding while respecting public order.”
