The Sonatrach Group’s firm commitment to cybersecurity and the need to strengthen protection against cyber threats were highlighted this Monday during an awareness day devoted to the theme of “Cyber Risks and Threats”, organized by the Central management of digitalization and information systems, according to a press release from the group.
During his speech, the President and CEO of Sonatrach, Rachid Hachichi, stressed that the fight against cybercrime is a sensitive issue and constitutes a real threat that could affect the security and continuity of operations in Sonatrach’s industrial facilities, placing managers on the front line of this preventive fight against these risks and threats. He also emphasized the need to understand cybersecurity issues and cyber risks to protect data, systems and networks.
The CEO also highlighted the crucial role of Sonatrach in the national economy, which makes it all the more responsible for protecting its infrastructure and its users.
This responsibility is based on current regulations as well as national and international cybersecurity standards.
In this sense, the same official insisted that cybersecurity is not limited only to securing information systems (IS) that manage data and applications, it must also extend to operational systems (OT) that control operations, equipment and industrial facilities, representing the backbone of the country’s economy.
In this regard, the group adopts a comprehensive strategy for cybersecurity risk management, based on the implementation of preventive policies based on the latest technologies and taking strict measures to protect vital data and systems. It also relies on raising employee awareness of security, given that the human element is considered the weakest and most targeted link in this area. In this context, users are trained in the basics of cybersecurity to avoid common mistakes, such as clicking on unknown links or accessing company accounts through unsecured networks, according to the same source.
In addition, the group ensures that its systems are updated to close security vulnerabilities. The company is also investing in building digital infrastructure that meets international standards.
It should be noted that Sonatrach recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Huawei Telecommunication Algeria to promote cooperation in the areas of cloud computing, data centers, computer networks, telecommunications and cybersecurity.
Mr. Hachichi reiterated that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility and urged all employees to maintain a high level of vigilance in the face of cyber threats with serious and potentially devastating consequences for the company’s reputation. He pointed out that every employee, as a manager, constitutes a prime target for cyber attackers due to the sensitivity of the data and files processed.
He also stressed the need to protect personal data with particular vigilance, stressing that a single negligence can compromise the security of the entire company.
