More than twenty people were killed in an attack in central Mali last Monday.
Two local officials blamed the tragedy on terrorists operating in the region, one of the hotbeds of violence in the Sahel.
Located a few dozen kilometers from Bandiagara, in the Dogon region, the village of Djiguibombo was the site of this deadly attack. According to information provided by the two governorate officials, at least 21 civilians lost their lives. The precarious security situation prevented the authorities from going to the scene immediately.
“At least 21 civilians were killed” in the village of Djiguibombo, a few dozen kilometers from Bandiagara, in Dogon country, one of these officials said yesterday. He attributed the attack to terrorists.
Since 2012, Mali has been facing a complex security crisis. On the one hand, separatist movements from Azawad are demanding their independence, while on the other hand, terrorist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and Daesh are carrying out attacks in the north and centre of the country.
In recent months, terrorist attacks have increased, endangering the country’s political stability.
The Malian armed forces (Fama) are overwhelmed, unable to effectively confront terrorist groups on several fronts.
In August 2023, the blockade of the city of Timbuktu began, isolating the city from the rest of the world.
Timbuktu, occupied by armed groups in 2012, has become an example of the barbarity of terrorist groups.
Access roads to the city are regularly attacked, both by land and by river.
On September 7, 2023, three rockets hit a passenger ship, killing more than 60 people, an act claimed by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM).
Since 2022, terrorist attacks have also targeted civilians, as well as the heart of Malian power.
In July 2022, in Kati (15 km from Bamako), a car bomb exploded near the military camp where the President of Mali resides. The terrorists were quickly neutralized.
These armed groups strengthen their arsenal by recovering military equipment from the Malian army with each attack.
