U.S. Ambassador to Algeria Elizabeth Moore Aubin provided an overview of bilateral relations as the two countries celebrate their Independence Day.
Trade and investment relations were described as flourishing by the diplomat, stressing the interest that companies in her country have in investing in Algeria in various fields, given the existing potential.
Hosting a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at the embassy headquarters in Algiers, on the occasion of the celebration by the two countries of their independence day, July 4 for the United States and July 5 for Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin affirmed, in her answers to journalists, that American companies will continue to invest in Algeria in all areas and that there is no particular area that interests operators.
She also discussed her country’s position in terms of investment and trade. According to her, the United States is the best example for foreign direct investment in Algeria. “American companies bring innovations and job opportunities to Algeria, while Algerian companies find new markets and partnerships in the United States,” she said, affirming that this economic synergy stimulates growth and improves living conditions in both countries.
Relying on IMF data, she said that the volume of direct investments has tripled and is currently estimated at $6 billion. As for the volume of trade between the two countries, it is estimated at $4 billion, according to the diplomat, specifying that the United States is working to increase this volume but also American investment in Algeria in various fields, citing agriculture, industry, health and the pharmaceutical sector. According to her, American investors are only looking for a stable legal framework, a win-win partnership and the possibility of transferring profits without hindrance.
Elizabeth Moore Aubin, who spoke about the presence of a hundred American companies in Algeria operating in various fields, spoke about the long-awaited Algiers-New York direct line, which is able to strengthen ties between the two peoples but especially trade. She thus spoke of the ongoing work and many meetings with the Algerian authorities concerned to make this project a reality. “We are still in discussion with the authorities concerned,” she said, affirming that the integration of the Open Sky agreement takes time.
Cultural cooperation between the two countries was also discussed, as well as record visa applications filed by Algerians. “Our cultural cooperation prepares the next generation of leaders to succeed in an increasingly connected world,” she said, noting continued cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education on English language teaching.
Asked about her recent meeting with the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, she said that this meeting was fruitful and that bilateral cooperation in various fields was reviewed. The diplomat, who reviewed her activity since her appointment in February 2022, reported important visits made to Algeria by American officials, which were sanctioned by the meeting of the presidents of the two countries on the sidelines of the G7. “The exchange between Presidents Biden and Tebboune on the sidelines of the G7 underlines the importance of close coordination on our bilateral objectives,” she said, noting the fact of regularly exchanging “our points of view on international initiatives, including at the United Nations, with the aim of promoting a more peaceful and stable world.”
Increased security coordination
Political and security cooperation between Algeria and the United States were also among the questions that the United States Ambassador to Algeria, Ms. Elizabeth Moore Aubin, had to answer.
Regarding the Zionist aggression against Gaza, the diplomat affirmed that Algeria and the United States were coordinating “on a permanent basis on the issue.”
According to her, these are telephone conversations between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
The American diplomat also noted the cooperation between the representatives of the two countries at the level of the UN Security Council, particularly with regard to Resolution 2728 of March 25, 2024, which calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Both countries therefore share the same vision regarding the need for an immediate ceasefire, in addition to the two-state solution and the need to bring more humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The situation in the Sahel, particularly in Libya, was also mentioned by the diplomat, who expressed his regrets at the resignation of the UN envoy to Libya.
She reported continuing discussions with Algeria and all parties concerned to designate a new special envoy.
Above all, she highlighted the convergence of views between the two countries regarding the ability of the Libyan people to decide for themselves their future without any foreign intervention.
Regarding the issue of Western Sahara, she said she supported the efforts of the UN special envoy to find a definitive solution to this conflict.
