Ten days before the deadline for submitting applications, the 32 declared candidates applying for the presidential election have not yet submitted their applications to the National Independent Election Authority.
According to our information, no personality has been able to gather the 50,000 signatures or the 600 signatures of elected officials, except the MSP candidate, Abdelali Hassani who, thanks to his hundreds of elected officials within the APC and APW, has managed to complete the file. Moreover, some candidates have launched calls for extensions, believing that they are finding enormous difficulties in collecting signatures across the regions of the country. Collecting 50,000 signatures is a real obstacle course, which requires colossal resources and above all an effective and dynamic activist base across at least thirty wilayas. Hence the easiest solution, that of falling back on the elected officials who sit at the level of the 1,541 communes and the 58 APW. But this is hardly possible.
This is especially the case for party leaders who did not participate in the last local elections in 2021. In addition, the big political parties, such as the FLN and the RND, which have thousands of elected officials, have completely blocked all the exits, prohibiting their elected officials and activists from signing for candidates other than the one supported by their national leadership.
Regarding new facilitations claimed by candidates in difficulty in this pre-campaign, the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) recently indicated, in a press release, that the cells for the legalization of individual signature subscription forms, for the benefit of candidates for candidacy for the presidential election, will remain open every day of the week, including Fridays and public holidays, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. “This measure is part of the facilitation of the operation of legalization of individual signature subscription forms for the benefit of candidates for candidacy for the presidential election of September 7, 2024,” specifies the same source.
The ANIE reminds that the national identification number (NIN) “is not mandatory to complete the subscription form, and the use of the classic identity card in the legalization operation remains in force”. “In the event of forgetting the voter card when signing the individual subscription form for the benefit of the candidate for the candidacy, it is possible to collect the certificate of registration on the electoral lists from the said cells”, concluded the press release.
Furthermore, the Secretary General of the RND, Mustapha Yahi, stressed, from Guelma, the “issue of citizen participation in the next presidential election”. He affirmed in this sense that “voting is not only a right but also a national duty”, urging all Algerians to actively engage in “ensuring the continuity of reforms and the stability of the country”. The head of the RND considered that this election is “crucial for the future of Algeria, symbolizing a commitment to progress, the preservation of social achievements and the strengthening of participatory democracy”.
For his part, the first secretary of the FFS, Youcef Aouchiche, stressed, during the installation of the party’s youth council, “the capital importance of involving young people in the political project of the FFS and mobilizing them for the 2024 presidential election.”
In his speech, Mr. Aouchiche expressed satisfaction about his participation in this event bringing together young activists from all regions of the country. He specified that “this council aimed to coordinate and supervise the efforts of the party’s youth during the electoral campaign, by capitalizing on their energy, ambition and hope to effectively achieve the party’s electoral objectives.” In this sense, the first secretary of the party recalled that his political party decided to participate in the presidential election in order to reinvest political spaces and revitalize public debate.
