Cereal and legume production project in Timimoun

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, affirmed the day before yesterday Saturday in Algiers, that the integrated project of production of cereals, legumes and pasta in the wilaya of Timimoun with a total value of 420 million euros, was part of the Algerian policy aimed at strengthening food security through the implementation of the National Plan for the development of strategic crops (cereals, legumes, sugar and oilseed plants, seeds and milk).
“This agreement is also part of the activation of privileged partnership relations between Algeria and Italy in all areas, particularly economic,” he said, stressing that it also reflected the strong desire of the leaders of the two countries to deepen and diversify this partnership.
Speaking at the signing ceremony of the framework agreement for the implementation of a cereal and legume production project in Timimoun, at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center (CIC, Algiers), Youcef Cherfa assured that this project will contribute to strengthening the national production of cereals and pulses, increasing non-hydrocarbon exports by exporting pasta, but also creating more than 6,700 jobs, including 1,600 permanent jobs.
“In addition to cereals and pulses, other strategic crops will be introduced into the crop rotation, including oilseeds such as soybeans,” he noted.
After welcoming the various incentive measures put in place by the State, the minister recalled the directives recently given by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to extend the cultivated areas in the South to 500,000 hectares and to increase the yield per hectare to at least 55 quintals.
“This objective will be achieved given the available assets and the efforts deployed,” said Youcef Cherfa, calling on investors to seize the opportunity and submit their investment projects to contribute to achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat by 2027.
For his part, the Italian Minister of Agriculture highlighted the importance of signing this agreement, which coincides, he said, with the celebration of the 62nd anniversary of the Independence and Youth Day of Algeria, ensuring that the project will contribute to food security, the creation of wealth and jobs and exports, particularly to African countries.
“Italy will work, within the framework of this project, on the transfer of technology,” he said, thereby saluting Algeria’s strategic role in the Mediterranean basin and in Africa.
For his part, the CEO of the Italian company BF, Federico Vecchioni, considered that this extremely important and strategic project with an international dimension will become a reference for the production of legumes in the Mediterranean. The agreement was initialed by the Director General of Agricultural Investment and Land at the Ministry, Souad Assaous, and the CEO of the Italian company BF, Federico Vecchioni, in the presence of the Ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, Finance, Laaziz Faid, Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, and Hydraulics, Taha Derbal.
