The departure of American soldiers from the Niamey base in Niger is complete and will be followed by September 15 by that of the forces based in Agadez (north), in accordance with the demands of the military regime in power, the two countries announced Sunday evening. “The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Niger and the Department of Defense of the United States of America announce that the withdrawal of American forces and equipment from the 101 air base in Niamey is now complete,” they said in a joint statement. “Thanks to effective cooperation and communication between the Nigerien and American armed forces, this operation was completed ahead of schedule and without any complications,” they said. A final flight with the soldiers from the Niamey base was due to take off at 11 p.m. local time (10 p.m. GMT). A total of 766 US military personnel have left Niger to date, AFP learned during a ceremony at the Niamey military base, in the presence of Colonel Maman Sani Kiaou, chief of staff of the Niger army, and General Kenneth Ekman of the US Department of Defense.
