«Ouvrir la voie aux jeunes dans l’agriculture !»

“Paving the way for young people in agriculture!”

The direction given by President Tebboune

Make way for young people in agriculture! This is the major direction given by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the meeting of the Council of Ministers that he chaired the day before yesterday, Monday. He ordered the organization of meetings in the field of agriculture for the benefit of young people to highlight the State’s ongoing support for their projects. The President of the Republic also reiterated his instructions regarding the need to provide all facilities to farmers and agricultural engineers for the acquisition of the necessary equipment, including new and used tractors, to encourage them to redouble their efforts. And above all, by emphasizing that “the development of the agricultural sector is a matter of sovereignty and national dignity for all of us,” President Tebboune instructed the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to pave the way for the new generation of agricultural engineers through small businesses and start-ups, in order to achieve a real revolution leading us to self-sufficiency.” This concerns self-sufficiency in three strategic crops, namely corn, barley and durum wheat for which the President of the Republic ordered “the establishment of a national strategy in the very short term”. It is necessary to “replace corn cultivation as a priority and make it a tradition in Algerian agricultural culture in order to reduce the budget for its importation”, indicated a press release from the Council of Ministers. The President of the Republic also ordered “the orientation of the flour mills at a standstill towards the activity in the field of livestock feed through the exploitation of our capacities in corn production, which will have a positive impact on animal wealth and in particular meat production”, the press release added.
The President of the Republic also stressed “the need to begin the stage of developing agricultural products through the pilot farms that have been restructured in order to make them more profitable, by giving an interest to the development of argan oil production, especially since Algeria has great capacities in this area. “President Tebboune also reiterated his instructions regarding the need to provide all facilities to farmers and agricultural engineers for the acquisition of the necessary equipment, including new and used tractors, to encourage them to redouble their efforts. Regarding the harvesting campaign, the President of the Republic ordered that beneficiaries of state aid and subsidies be required to achieve specific targets in terms of harvests, after careful studies and a complete census to assess farmers’ efforts and identify gaps. In the same context, the President insisted on the control and monitoring of harvest campaigns, ensuring compliance with deadlines to avoid deterioration of the harvest, the statement added. The agricultural sector is expected to experience major upheavals in the coming years. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa recently announced the launch, during this year, of the development of 500,000 hectares of land in the southern wilayas, with a view to promoting national capacities in terms of cereal production, with the aim of achieving food security. “The implementation of this project, which should be completed in the next three years, will be implemented in partnership with international companies, including Italian and Qatari companies,” said Youcef Cherfa, specifying that “the National Plan for the Development of Strategic Crops, concerns in addition to increasing cereal production capacities, other agricultural sectors, such as the cultivation of legumes, oilseeds and seeds.”
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development had stated earlier that Algeria will achieve self-sufficiency in durum wheat by 2027, within the framework of the National Plan for the Development of Strategic Crops. He recalled that the investment law will pave the way for partnership with foreign companies, allowing to benefit from experience and technology to improve yields in the field of strategic crops.
