National Security has embarked on an ambitious modernization program by adapting to the development dynamics that Algeria is experiencing. This was indicated on Monday by Brahim Merad, Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Regional Planning.
During his speech at the ceremony celebrating the 62nde anniversary of the creation of the Algerian police at the direction of the Republican Security Units (URS) of El-Hamiz, in Dar El-Beida, Mr. Merad affirmed the determination of the high authorities to promote this security institution, through strategic investments in terms of personnel, modern equipment and working methods focused on professionalism and operational efficiency.
Expressing his pride and respect for the efforts of the men and women of this institution in protecting citizens’ property, while respecting human rights, the minister revealed that, during the period 2020-2024, some 185 projects, including 151 professional structures and 34 socio-professional structures, were registered for a financial cost of more than 23 billion dinars.
These achievements have made it possible to achieve a national security coverage rate of 80%, specifying that the DGSN workforce is around 223,000 elements, dedicated to preserving the security of citizens and their property. He also said that 45% of the total structures registered in the last two years have been assigned to the ten new wilayas, created by decision of the President of the Republic. These structures have benefited from the assignment of approximately 8,000 elements, all from these wilayas, in order to ensure optimal security coverage.
The Minister of Interior also expressed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s appreciation for the police institution and his continued support to improve their working conditions and continuing training, stating that “the promotion and continuing training of human resources remains a top priority.” In this spirit, since 2020, more than 100,000 police personnel have benefited from promotions, reflecting the commitment to maintaining a high level of skills among public security officers.
Highlighting the importance of innovation, Mr. Merad announced the creation of six new security specializations, in response to the demands of the field and the evolution of forms of crime. He assured that this approach is essential to effectively respond to the complex and constantly evolving challenges of modern security.
In terms of digitalization, the head of National Security mentioned the connection of police services by optical fiber and the launch of smart city projects in several security establishments, thus demonstrating the continued commitment to modernize police operations.
He specified that more than 1,000 police services have been connected to optical fiber, and the launch of the smart cities project at the level of 1,268 security units, the development of several modern information systems and applications as well as the intensification of cooperation activities and exchange of experiences at the regional, continental and international levels are expected.
He also discussed efforts to strengthen the security of residential complexes through strategic plans integrating cutting-edge technologies and increased outreach work.
Addressing the fight against drug trafficking and psychotropic drugs, the minister indicated that these “plans are concocted by the various emerging threats through cyberspace, which has become a refuge for those who seek to spread their venom against the country, to practice fraud and swindle, to deceive citizens, as well as to exploit the various social networks to spread sedition and threaten our national values.”
Furthermore, in anticipation of the next presidential election, Mr. Merad called for additional recruitment to guarantee optimal security coverage, thus ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for the democratic exercise.
For his part, the Director General of National Security, Ali Badaoui, stressed, in his speech delivered on this occasion, that the Algerian police is ready and willing to face new challenges in light of the profound transformations that the world is experiencing. He also stressed that the Algerian police remains on high alert to face new challenges in a world undergoing profound change. The DGSN explained that global challenges require greater vigilance, reinforced efforts and total preparation, in close coordination with all partners, in order to strengthen national security and the protection of property.
He assured that the DGSN has accelerated the modernization and digitalization of the police, thus improving public services and relying on new technologies. In addition, the training and development procedures within the police have been revised, by updating programs and curricula, thus modernizing the training of officers so that they can carry out their missions effectively. He also affirmed that the national security institution continues on the path of developing and improving the capacities of these elements towards a level of qualitative performance aiming at the highest standards of professionalism.
