“Defend the interests of the African continent, make its voice heard and mobilize support for the joint efforts of member countries with the aim of enabling the continent to fully play its role in preserving peace and security in Africa, in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter, while waiting to correct the injustice done to the African continent regarding its representativeness at the level of the Security Council.” This is Algeria’s commitment in its capacity as a non-member
permanent position within the UN Security Council, reiterated the day before yesterday Sunday in Accra by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in a speech read on his behalf by the Prime Minister, Nadir Larbaoui, during the work of the 6th Biannual Meeting between the African Union (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms.
President Tebboune stressed that “Algeria’s commitment comes in an unstable international context marked by the inability of the international community to assume its responsibilities, to establish international peace and security”, recalling “the barbaric genocide perpetrated by the occupation forces against the defenseless Palestinian people.”
The President of the Republic reiterated Algeria’s unwavering solidarity and its unwavering support for the Palestinian people until the recovery of all their legitimate rights, at the top of which is the establishment of their independent state with Al-Quds as its capital.
In the same speech, President Tebboune said that “Algeria, which holds the presidency of the North Africa Regional Capacity, one of the five organs of the African Standby Force, is continuing its efforts to strengthen the operationalization of this regional mechanism and thus enable it to contribute effectively to the maintenance of peace and security in Africa.”
Algeria, through the voice of President Tebboune, welcomed “with pride, the announcement published by the African Union Commission, which affirms the full availability of the North Africa Regional Capacity. President Tebboune noted that “this announcement is likely to encourage member countries to continue preparations for the simulation exercise of an operation to deploy a peace support mission, scheduled for the end of 2024, with the aim of maintaining a high level of preparation and ensuring a rapid and effective response to pressing and urgent situations.” “Based on these encouraging developments,” continued President Tebboune, “Algeria emphasizes the imperative of strengthening the achievements made and consolidating the results obtained.”
In this sense, the President
Tebboune makes the following four recommendations: welcome the announcement of the operationalization of the North Africa Regional Capacity; provide the necessary and indispensable support to the Executive Secretariat of the North Africa Regional Capacity, with a view to implementing the scheduled simulation exercise, which will constitute an added value for the preparation of the African Standby Force; expedite the adoption of the Memorandum of Understanding on the African Standby Force between the African Union Commission, on the one hand, and the Regional Economic Communities and regional mechanisms, on the other; move forward with the revision of the strategic concept of the African Standby Force in order to further adapt it to the African Union doctrine on peacekeeping operations while mobilizing the necessary support for it as an integral part of the African peace and security architecture.
Similarly, President Tebboune also stressed “the need to enshrine the principle of ‘African solutions to African problems’ by intensifying the joint efforts of AU member states and mobilizing their collective capacities to address the accelerated international developments and growing internal crises facing the continent.”
“This principle, established by the founding fathers of the continental organization, has been and remains a strategic objective requiring the strengthening of the continental architecture of peace and security” through “the completion of the activation of all its mechanisms for the prevention and resolution of conflicts, in particular the African Standby Force (ASF), with a view to using them, ideally, in the face of current challenges,” maintains the President of the Republic.
