Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui participated, as the representative of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the 6th Biannual Meeting between the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms, held the day before yesterday Sunday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. This high-level meeting was devoted to strengthening coordination and cooperation between the AU, RECs and Regional Mechanisms in different areas with a view to supporting efforts to maintain peace and security and to accelerate the pace of development and economic integration at the continental level.
This is the main forum for the AU and the RECs to harmonize their work and coordinate the implementation of the continental integration agenda. It is an opportunity to devote coordination with the RECs, with the participation of their presidents, the AU Commission, the President of the African Development Bank and the Regional Mechanisms. It is known that Algeria welcomed the conclusions of the 16th session of the Technical Committee on Defense, Safety and Security, in particular the decisions and recommendations aimed at accelerating the activation of the African Standby Force (ASF).
Algeria also welcomed the announcement by the AU Commission of the full operationalization of the North Africa Regional Capability (NARC), which is part of the five regions of the ASF. This announcement comes following field inspections by UN and African experts of the various components of the ASF and the military, civilian and logistical capacities at its disposal, which truly meet all international standards in this area. For Algeria, the achievements of the NARC deserve to be welcomed and encouraged. The availability of this capacity brings one step closer to the activation of the continental ASF project, especially since the continent greatly needs this important mechanism to address the growing security threats facing our countries and peoples, as well as the hotbeds of conflict that have multiplied and intensified on our continent.
As a reminder, an exercise on the Command Post of the North Africa Regional Capacity, entitled ”Salam North Africa II”, was organized from 18 to 25 November 2023 by the Logistics Base of the North Africa Regional Capacity in Jijel (5th Military Region). This exercise was part of the strengthening of the operational availability of the North Africa Regional Capacity and in order to enhance the potential for joint planning between the different components of the capacity.
