Many people fear a drought that could compromise their harvests. A situation that will result in the disruption of the market supply of fruits and vegetables and the scarcity of certain products. After the last rainfall recorded in several wilayas of the country in May and June and which relatively boosted the morale of farmers, the latter are once again starting to scan the sky, looking for signs of potential arrival of rains. In this context, the management of agricultural services has drawn up a new watering program to save fruit trees from drought, especially during this heatwave.
For this purpose, 3000 m3 of wastewater are treated per day, thus allowing the irrigation of 5,000 hectares of fruit trees, according to the agricultural services of the wilaya of Relizane.
The dreaded spectre of a succession of years of drought demonstrates the extreme vulnerability of agriculture, and even the national economy, in the face of a water shortage that has become structural. “Developing watering can resolve this problem,” according to an agronomist. According to our interlocutor, watering fruit trees, especially during summer droughts, is necessary to ensure their recovery after planting (basin, irrigation, dredging, etc.). After each heatwave, young trees do not survive the following year due to a lack of efficient watering. In other words, plantations and therefore investments are lost for communities.
