Turkey launched the second warship for the Ukrainian fleet.

The Ada-class corvette Hetman Ivan Vygovsky, which is being built in Turkey for the Ukrainian Navy, was launched in Istanbul on August 1. The ceremony, which took place at the RMK Marine shipyard, was attended by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, the Commander of the Navy Oleksiy Neizhpapa, the President’s wife Olena Zelenska, the Chairman of the Mejlis Mustafa Dzhemilev and the owner of the Turkish defense company Baykar Haluk Bayraktar.

The corvette will make its maiden voyage in 2026. The vessel should be handed over to the customer in the first quarter of 2027, said Özgür Gülerüz, general director of the shipbuilding company STM. He added that STM will continue to work to strengthen the fleet of Ukraine, which he called a “strategic partner” of Turkey.

In October 2022, the first corvette of a similar class, Hetman Ivan Mazepa, was launched in Istanbul, which should become the flagship of the Ukrainian fleet. This spring, it went on sea trials.

The ships are being built outside Ukraine because of its war with Russia. Umerov noted that the corvettes are “equipped with modern weapons” and will be a “valuable addition” to the fleet. He recalled that Ukraine has already “broken Russia’s dominance” in the sea, destroying dozens of its ships, and is now actively expanding the capabilities of the Navy in the Black and Azov Seas, increasing its defense capability. “We are grateful to our Turkish partners for their support in a difficult time for our state,” Umerov added.
