⚡️ EU’s Michel blasts Orbán as row over Hungary’s diplomatic push on Ukraine intensifies
In his reply, Michel acknowledged Orbán’s thoughts and suggestions but sought to “clarify the situation” regarding the key points of the letter.
Michel criticized Hungary for its independent diplomatic contacts with Ukraine, reminding that the rotating chairmanship of the EU Council “does not mean representing the European Union internationally” and that Orbán did not have a mandate from the European Council to act on its behalf. He noted he had already indicated this before Orbán’s visit to Moscow.
“We have reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to support Ukraine and its people as long and as intensively as necessary,” Michel stated, emphasizing that the bloc’s position on Ukraine is agreed upon by all 27 EU member states.
Michel also highlighted the EU’s key political stance: “No discussion about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine.”
He disagreed with Orbán’s claim that the EU’s “pro-war policy” has failed, stressing that Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is exercising its legal right to self-defense.
“Finally, the most direct way to peace is for Russia to withdraw all its forces from Ukraine and respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the UN Charter,” Michel concluded.
Michel mentioned that he has sent a letter to all EU member states and will inform Ukraine about the correspondence.
