‼️German ministers look to boycott Hungarian EU presidency

After several EU countries announced a boycott of the upcoming informal council meeting in Hungary, Germany seems ready to follow suit as not a single minister will travel to Budapest to attend the meeting.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been subject to criticism for several weeks. Only weeks after Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the EU, he went on a self-proclaimed ‘peace mission’ to Moscow, Beijing, and Trump’s estate in Florida.

At the end of last week, it became known that multiple Northern and Eastern European countries will not send their ministers but only officials to the meetings throughout July.

As asked by Euractiv, none of the 15 German ministries confirmed the attendance of a federal minister at any upcoming event.

Only a lower-ranking state secretary will attend the meetings for many ministries, including the Justice and Interior Ministries. Others have either not decided yet or are not scheduled for a minister meeting soon.
