Ukraine’s Ground Forces have reported that the Russians are wiping the town of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk Oblast off the face of the earth. Sudzha is currently controlled by the Ukrainian military.

Details: The statement reveals that approximately 200 civilians remain in the city out of a population of around 5,000. According to international humanitarian law, these civilians, who are predominantly of retirement age, are receiving assistance from the Ukrainian military.

Recently, officials from the newly established Ukrainian military commandant’s office have set up a water supply system in Sudzha to ensure the local population has access to drinking water. Previously, the Ukrainian military addressed this issue using water trucks and vehicles with large tanks.

“Ukrainian troops are also providing medical assistance to civilians in Sudzha: at stabilisation centres, in medical evacuation vehicles, and wherever there are injured and sick people,” the Ukrainian Ground Forces stressed.
Background:
- Ukrainian forces crossed the Russo-Ukrainian border near the town of Sudzha, Kursk Oblast, on 6 August 2024.
- On 12 August, the Ukrainian authorities confirmed for the first time that Ukrainian forces were holding a special operation in Kursk Oblast.
- In particular, the town of Sudzha is under Ukrainian control, and Ukrainian and foreign journalists have visited it. The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) opened criminal cases against American and Ukrainian journalists who filmed in the area of the town of Sudzha in Kursk Oblast after it was taken over by Ukrainian troops.
- As of 20 August, the Ukrainian military had taken control of over 1,260 sq. km of territory and 93 settlements in Kursk Oblast.
- On 30 August, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported at a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff that Ukrainian troops had advanced up to 2 km in certain areas of Kursk Oblast over the previous day and had gained control of 5 sq. km of Russian territory.
