A Ukrainian citizen is said to have been detained at an anti-government protest in Tbilisi.

Details: The TV channel reported that law enforcement officers had found a pepper spray and a mobile phone during a search of the Ukrainian.

Georgian police claimed they had detained the man as part of a criminal case related to the organisation of group violence, which carries a sentence of up to nine years in prison.

“Law enforcers took the detainee in handcuffs to the police station,” Rustavi 2 says.

The TV channel did not specify when the Ukrainian citizen had been detained.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry told European Pravda that it was investigating the detention of the Ukrainian citizen.

Background: 

• Protests have been raging in Georgia for a week, sparked by doubts over the results of the parliamentary elections announced by the authorities and the government’s decision to delay negotiations on EU membership until 2029.
• At the same time, the ruling Georgian Dream party insists that this decision does not signify a rejection of European integration, emphasising that the authorities expect Georgia to join the EU by 2030.
• Earlier, large-scale searches were conducted in the offices of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations in Tbilisi, leading to the detention of at least one opposition leader.
