China Launches $167B Mega-Dam in Tibet, Sparking Regional Tensions
China (PRC) has kicked off construction on a colossal $167 billion dam project on Tibet’s Yarlung Tsangpo River, state media announced Saturday. The initiative, spearheaded by China Yajiang Group, involves five cascade dams in Nyingchi, southeastern Tibet, aimed at generating massive hydropower, with most electricity destined for regions beyond Tibet.
Billed as one of China’s priciest infrastructure ventures, the project aligns with Beijing’s drive to spur economic growth. However, it’s stirring concerns in India, as the river flows into disputed Arunachal Pradesh, feeding a vital Indian waterway. China insists downstream areas will remain unaffected, but the move could strain diplomatic ties.
