Three hundred and fifty swimmers (gentlemen and ladies), representing 38 clubs of 25 wilayas will participate in the third edition of the crossing of Algiers bay, scheduled for the morning of Saturday August 9, over a distance of ten kilometers, between the beach of the Sablettes in Hussein-Dey and the Marina of Bordj El Bahri, announced the organizers on Wednesday.
“The two previous editions were successful, on all fronts, and we hope to do even better this year, because we are still trying to move forward. Moreover, our next objective will be to give an international cachet to this competition, by welcoming foreign swimmers, “announced the president of the Algerian swimming league, Othmane Abdelhafid, during an animated press conference at the Stade du 5-July (Algiers).
Participants in this free water competition will be divided into three groups, according to their age categories, namely: that of 14-17 year olds, 18-30 year olds, and that of 31 and over, which is a novelty compared to the two previous editions.
Since the competition also has an entertainment and tourist stamp, Othmane Abdelhafid stressed that even swimmers with “amateur” status will be able to participate. As a reminder, during the first edition, disputed over a distance of five kilometers, only the swimmers of the wilaya of Algiers had participated in the event, and their number was only 200 athletes.
Things had evolved during the second edition, by bringing the competition to a regional status, with the incorporation of swimmers from adjoining wilayas, and today, during this third edition, the crossing of the Bay of Algiers acquired the status of national competition.
Indeed, no less than twenty-five wilayas of different regions of the country (north, east, west and south) will be represented in this third edition, namely: Algiers, Tlemcen, Guelma, Mostaganem, Ghardaïa, Ouargla, Tipasa, Bouira, Oran, Skikda, Boussaâda, Sétif, Constantine, Mila, Chlef, Timouchent, Jijel, Boumerdès, Béjaïa, Annaba, Médéa, Bordj Bou Arréridj and Khenchela.
“We have devoted more than four months to the preparation of this event, to ensure good organization” revealed the director of the sports organization (back) Halim Hamza, adding that it was decided to requisition 35 boats, equipped with rescuers, to guarantee the safety of swimmers when they are in the open sea.
As a reminder, the crossing of Algiers bay was relaunched in 2023, after a five -year stop. This 2025 edition will see the participation of 68 women, from different age categories.
