The drifts of French President Emmanuel Macron in his management of relations with Algeria have aroused strong criticism in the political circles of France, in particular within the left opposition and even on his own camp of the right.
President Macron had instructed his head of government and especially his Minister of the Interior to take “retaliatory” measures against Algerian nationals, affecting diplomats, consular agents, students, researchers and practically all Franco-Algerians who live with the family. These decisions caused a real outcry within French public opinion, creating strong controversies on this escalation chosen by Macron.
Among these most remarkable reactions, there is that of the former French minister and ex-candidate with the presidential election Ségolène Royal. The latter castigated President Macron in his policy of Algeria, denouncing in particular his “controversial card” in the management of relations between the two countries.
In a message published the day before yesterday evening on social networks, Ségolène Royal denounced Emmanuel Macron’s latest outings with regard to Algeria, described as “diversion” aimed at “diverting the attention of the serious issues internal to which France faces, in particular devastating fires in Aude and civil security deficiencies”.
Ségolène Royal stressed that “the controversial card with Algeria has emerged, as every time we have to be diversioned, so that we are looking elsewhere: terrible fires in Aude and we discover the serious negligence of the unwitting promises on plane equipment and the enormous decrease in the Civil Security Budget”.
In the process, she did not fail to denounce the government’s inability to effectively respond to major internal crises, preferring to focus on diplomatic tensions.
But Mrs. Royal does not stop there. It also alerts to a “high -risk social return” as well as the absence of concrete measures to prevent a new social explosion in a country already weakened by persistent social conflicts.
The former minister also denounced in his message the management of diplomatic relations “with a major country in the region”, accusing the French president of having entrusted this file to an interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, perceived as nostalgic for colonization and which embodies “destructive postures”.
For Ségolène Royal, this management is all the more problematic since Retailleau is a defender of the law of Nicolas Sarkozy on “the benefits of colonization”, which, according to her, is incompatible with the long -term interests of France.
“Having entrusted relations with Algeria to someone who defends this type of law is a fundamental error,” she insists.
“We want seriousness, mastered, respect and competence. And about Algeria, to restore good relations, this question should be asked: to have entrusted diplomatic relations with this great country to a nostalgic minister of colonization and who voted and defended the unworthy law of Sarkozy on “the benefits of colonization”, is it compatible with the interests of France, when we know that, by definition, no solution will only be out of destructive postures. Royal in his message.
This is not the first time that Ségolène Royal has criticized the management of the crisis with Algeria by the French government. It has already criticized the provocative approach of the French authorities with regard to Algiers, in particular immigration files, the issuance of visas and the mobility of Algerian nationals, as well as the non-compliance with the clauses of several agreements between the two countries.
