Powerful earrthquake hits northwestern Turkey, deaths feared as buildings collapse



A powerful earthquake has struck Balıkesir, northwestern Turkey, causing building collapses and prompting ongoing rescue efforts.

The quake, measuring 6.1 magnitude, occurred at 7.53 pm local time (GMT+3) local time with its epicenter in the Sındırgı district, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The tremor was felt across nearby provinces, including Istanbul.

Sındırgı Mayor Serkan Sak reported that “more than 10 buildings have collapsed,” adding that communication with some areas remains disrupted. The state-run Anadolu Agency confirmed that five people have so far been rescued from the rubble. (VK)
