Algérie-Somalie : Alliance historique à l’ère des nouveaux défis régionaux

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met this Somali counterpart this Sunday in Algiers, with his Somali counterpart, Abdessalam Abdi Ali, on an official visit, which was crowned by the signing of three strategic agreements for regional stability and African diplomacy.

“The relations between Algeria and Somalia are historic and derive their strength from the values that bring our two countries closer, namely understanding, solidarity and mutual trust,” said Attaf after his interview with Abdi Ali. He also said that “Algeria’s interest in Somalia has never interrupted itself”, stressing that “our country has always supported Somali efforts in favor of peace and stability”.

For Mr. Attaf, this commitment “has never been cyclical or passenger, but is based on the deep conviction that the security and stability of Somalia are inseparable from those of the region of the horn of Africa and, more broadly, of the African continent”. He added that this position reflects the total involvement of Algeria in the mobilization, within the African Union (AU) and the United Nations, to support the efforts of the Somali authorities, recalling that this support is part of the double belonging of Algeria to the UN Security Council and the AU peace and security council.

ATTAF welcomed “considerable and qualitative advances” carried out by MOGADISCIO on the path of the strengthening of national institutions, economic recovery and the consolidation of security, as well as the reaffirmation of its place on the African and international scenes. He noted that the current presence of Somalia in the UN Security Council, as a non -permanent member and actor of the African Coalition of A3+, is a strong sign of this positive dynamic.

The two parties agreed to consolidate the institutional architecture of cooperation and to enrich the legal framework linking the two countries, concretized by the signing of three agreements relating to the creation of a mixed intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation, the implementation of a mechanism of regular political consultations and cooperation in diplomatic training. He added that, by their respective membership in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, Algeria and Somalia support all the initiatives in favor of peace and stability in these spaces. For his part, the Somali Minister argued that the agreements signed “will open the way to the expansion of the prospects for cooperation and to a strengthening of diplomatic dialogue, both regional and international”.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui received the Somali Minister who transmitted to him the greetings and esteem of the Somali president to his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlighting the determination of Somalia to rely on the support of strategic partners, like Algeria, to consolidate stability and continue the efforts of national reconstruction.
