US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin arrived in Alaska on Friday for a highly anticipated summit on the war in Ukraine. The goal of the American president and Putin is to obtain a cease-fire, more than three and a half years after the start of the war in Ukraine.

The summit between the two presidents on the war in Ukraine began shortly after 11:26 a.m. locals (7:26 p.m. GMT) with a handshake.

The two leaders, accompanied by their advisers, were sitting side by side in front of an inscription on a blue background where one could read “seeking peace”. They made no statement before the press.

Vladimir Putin is accompanied by his chief of diplomacy Sergei Lavrov and his diplomatic advisor Iouri Ouchakov for his meeting with Donald Trump, the Kremlin told the CNN channel.

In a position of strength on the front, where its troops have accelerated their advances in recent months in strategic sectors, Russia maintains maximalist requirements to put an end to its operation in the Russian -speaking Donbass.

The Kremlin estimated on Friday that the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could last a total of “at least 6 to 7 am”.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov explained that leaders would meet head-on, before wider negotiations between their delegations, then a common press conference.
