The Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal, underlined, Wednesday, in Timimoun, the importance of the rehabilitation of the Foggaras, an ancestral legacy which it belongs, he said, to safeguard. Ensuring, during the support of its sector to farmers rehabilitation and revivification of the hydraulic system for said Foggaras.
“The rehabilitation of Foggaras, this ancestral legacy based on the capture of groundwater and their surface adduction towards palm groves and gardens, is of great importance,” he said. Revealing, on the occasion, a national project, funded via the National Water Fund, aimed at reviving this heritage that it is up to safeguarding.
Intervening on the sidelines of the inspection of rehabilitation works of the Foggara de Metarfa (120 km south of the wilaya of Timimoun), one of the largest in the region, connected to 1,700 wells through a network of 14 km, and which debits some 35 liters/second of water and irrigates 500 hectares of gardens, the minister said that the desired objective of the rehabilitation of the rehabilitation of the rehabilitation of Foggaras and their preservation, a system, very old in the South of Algeria, exploited for the irrigation of palm groves and gardens, is to increase their water flows, to encourage traditional agriculture and to extend the irrigated areas. Its rehabilitation includes the cleaning of its gallery, the reconstruction of the walls of the sagged wells, the maintenance of the water conduits and the creation of a protective fence of the traditional system for sharing its waters, known locally under the name of Kesria.
In the town of Tinerkouk (70 km north of Timimoun), the Minister of Hydraulics emphasized the connection of all Ksour to the sanitation network. Stressing, in passing, the importance of generalizing the connection of Ksour to sanitation networks, with the concern of improving the living environment of the citizen.
“Priority projects in the sector, including those concerning sanitation networks, will be taken care of via the National Water Fund (FNE), with a view to allowing their prompt management,” he continued. Calling, on the occasion, local officials in the sector to already start the preparation their specifications.
Regarding the supply of drinking water, Taha Derbal indicated that the wilaya does not suffer from a water deficit, but observed the Minister of Hydraulics, records some black dots at the level of three of his municipalities which it is up to eliminate as soon as possible. Highlighting the need to transfer the management of drinking water from the Water Algerian municipalities (ADE) and sanitation networks to the National Sanitation Office (ONA). By endowing them, added the minister, the necessary equipment.
