Funding of 200 million DA is devoted to the rehabilitation of Foggaras, a traditional irrigation system spread in the South of Algeria, announced on Wednesday in Timimoun, the Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal. Speaking on the sidelines of the inspection of rehabilitation work of the Foggara de Metarfa (120 km south of Timimoun), the minister indicated that the rehabilitation of the Foggaras, this ancestral legacy based on the capture of the groundwater and their surface adduction towards the palm groves and the gardens, is “great importance”, revealing, in this capacity Funded via the National Water Fund, aimed at revitalizing this heritage “that it is up to safeguard”. The expected objective of the rehabilitation of foggaras and their preservation is to increase their water flows, to encourage traditional agriculture and to extend irrigated areas. This system, very old in the South of Algeria, is exploited for the irrigation of palm groves and gardens and constitutes an ecological and socioeconomic system which contributed to the development of Oasian agriculture and to the fixing of populations in the region.
