For refugees, displaced communities are currently adequate homelessness.
“According to some information, two civilians were injured in the crossfire.”
More than 15,000 people displaced in three days by fighting in the Southwest, the persistent violence of the past few days have caused the movements of thousands of people, in a province of southwest Somalia, which shares borders with Kenya and Ethiopia, has the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR). “On August 11, 2025, armed confrontations broke out in Belet-Hawo, in the Gedo region, between two armed groups affiliated with the federal government of Somalia and the state of Jubaland,” detailed the UNHCR in its latest report, noting that these fights led to the movement of 2,530 households (15,180 people) to the surrounding areas, in particular LIILAN, Gaawido, Hodan and Oda. This is the third wave of armed clashes to strike Belet-Hawo since July 2025, amplifying forced trips and aggravating the risks in terms of protection. These new displaced people are added to the 100,000 people displaced in the past two months by conflicts in the center and southern Somalia. These hostilities and population movements in the Hiraan and Gedo regions also accentuate the pressure on local resources already limited, with shortages of shelters, food, drinking water and care. In the Gedo region, the situation remains “unstable” and presents “a high risk of new attacks against civilians and illegal executions”. “Civil infrastructure and displaced camps remain exposed to potential damage as long as the conflict persists,” warned the UN agency based in Geneva. In addition, women and girls are exposed to increased risks of sexist violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence, due to overcrowded living conditions, lack of safe shelters and insecurity. The newly moved families find refuge in overcrowded sites alongside populations already moved, living in makeshift shelters offering little intimacy.
Food insecurity worsens
Many displaced households were already suffering from food insecurity before their trip. The influx of new displaced people from Tool-Amiin and the Ajuuran camp has aggravated the situation in terms of food security. Many displaced people have settled in places where water supply is provided by tanker trucks. This has increased the number of households depending on this service and reduces the supply of water available per household. There is also an urgent need for materials for the construction of emergency shelters and non -food articles in order to restore minimum living conditions and preserve the health, safety and dignity of affected populations. This situation occurs while humanitarian agencies are faced with severe budgetary reductions. The humanitarian plan of $ 1.4 billion planned for Somalia this year is only funded at around 16 %, with $ 231 million received to date.
