This week, the United States was the scene of two historic heights that will long determine transatlantic relations. On the one hand, a renewal of the Russian-American agreement, on the other an increasingly important distancing between Washington and its European “allies”. At the center of this dynamic, the war in Ukraine and the alignment of the stars between the USA and Russia.
First act, Friday August 15 in Anchorage (Alaska). The red carpet was unrolled to the Russian president in an unprecedented demonstration in the annals of the summits organized in the United States. Not only did the American president applied a protocol deemed “unusual” to welcome his Russian counterpart, Donald Trump confirmed the force of force in the management of world affairs. How ?
Putin in guest star
By unrolling the red carpet to Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, the White House tenant seemed to mean the world that Washington knows how to recognize his alter ego. The message, to Europeans who have continued to be gesticulating around the Ukrainian issue, is unequivocal. It is in the balance of power that the Americans under the Trump presidency apprehend international relations. The ceremonial reserved for Putin is indicative of this perception. Not only is the Russian president welcomed with all the honors due to his rank, he is in any rehabilitated Urbi and Orbi fate after being ostracized by an arrogant West even going so far as to issue an international arrest warrant against him.
All of this was thrown in the nettles! In anchorage, Trump demonstrated in the face of the world that he respected Russian power. The photographic poses, the handshakes, the tête-à-tête in the presidential car, the meeting of the two delegations, all these arrangements reflected one thing: the respect and the admiration that the Trump administration at Vladimir Putin and his staff dedicated. Hence the deal: no ceasefire, pursuit of dialogue, meets Putin-Zelensky-Trump, the keys to peace being in the hands of the Ukrainian president, Europe remains on the ban of spectators-actors!
Anchorage, the capital of Alaska, was an Russian land until the end of the 19th century. It was therefore in the end of the former Russian Empire that Vladimir Putin moved. The symbolism is double when we see the Russian president bowing on the graves of the Soviet aviators who fell in Alaska during the Second World War.
A sequence reminiscent of Moscow and Washington were formerly allies. And during his press briefing at the end of the Alaska summit, Putin reiterated her postulates to end the war in Ukraine, never denied by Trump. The latter seemed to go in his sense: no ceasefire, no membership of Ukraine at NATO, territorial gains for Moscow according to the front line, meeting Putin-Zelensky extended to Trump. Trump’s thought was going to be specified in Washington.
Ukraine from Zelensky Vassalized
Act two, Monday August 18 in Washington. In two stages. First the Trump-Zelensky tête-à-tête. More polite, less stormy than last February meeting, the White House interview acted the Trump-Putine deal. The ball is now in the Ukrainian camp. The Zelensky Convention has abounded in the direction of its host: after having devoted its qualities, Zelensky repeated the American discourse: arms contract, security guarantees, no Ukraine in NATO, meeting with Putin, possibility of territorial concessions. Suffice to say that the Ukrainian president has put a lot of water in his wine, more than ever resigned to accept the Russian-American deal.
It is therefore a doubly vassalized Ukraine in Moscow and Washington that will discuss terms of peace in Belarus or Switzerland. The anchorage deal providing for the literal sharing of the Ukrainian lands between Russians and Americans, kyiv is now in the posture to respond favorably to the American-Russian agreement under penalty of attracting the wrath of Trump. Zelensky understood this. Remains the Europeans.
Cold shower for Europeans
This is the second sequence of this second act. The White House meeting with European leaders. The German chancellor, the French president, the British Prime Minister, the president of the Italian council, the Finnish president, the president of the European Commission and the general secretary of NATO also made the trip of Washington, obviously to support Ukraine. In fact, they are worth it necessary to act next peace in this country, a peace which is equivalent to a situation of non-war, close to the situation in Georgia post-2008 or Cyprus since 1974.
What does that mean? The peace promised to kyiv is equivalent to an agreement on a fait accompli, that of the loss of territories (Crimea, Sebastopol, Donbass) and the establishment of a provisional architecture to manage a situation that will last. European leaders have, on this one; Drink the chalice to the dregs. They who were looking at all costs to send troops, and especially American troops, on the front line, were signified an end of failing on the part of Trump who forced them to revise their budget allocated to NATO, while refusing that soldiers are present on Ukrainian soil.
Moreover, Putin would have proposed to the American president, during the anchorage summit, the sending of Chinese interposition forces.
Result of the races, the Europeans were rapeted in Washington by their own ally and protector, while the Ukrainians are preparing to take the choices they have always refused to take, they who since 2014, have caused chaos within their country by persecuting their Russian -speaking fellow citizens.
The Russians jubilant, wait and hope that Zelensky will break his own law, that of prohibiting any negotiation with Russia before the “liberation” of the now Russian territories, to sit on the same table as Vladimir Putin.
