Having become a public health problem, obesity is one of the world health challenges. In Algeria, it is recognized as a real pathology and considered one of the major factors of the increase in the number of cases of chronic diseases. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), almost one in three Algerians is overweight, and the proportion of obese people continues to grow. Faced with this situation, the association of diabetics of the wilaya of Algiers sounds the alarm and calls for national mobilization.
“Obesity is no longer a simple aesthetic problem, but a real pathology with serious consequences”, alerts the association. It recalls that excess weight is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers.
Specialists also observe a disturbing progression of infantile obesity. Children and adolescents, more and more exposed to junk food, sugary drinks and lack of physical activity, are particularly vulnerable.
The association explains that the evolution of eating habits in Algeria plays a decisive role. The consumption of dishes rich in fats, fast foods and sweet soft drinks has become widespread, to the detriment of a balanced diet.
Added to this is sedentary lifestyle, accentuated by urbanization, the massive use of the car and the time spent in front of the screens. “The modern lifestyle has profoundly upset behavior, and the organization in pays the price,” deplores the association.
According to the association of diabetics of the wilaya of Algiers, the diagnosis of obesity is essentially based on the calculation of the body mass index (BMI), which is calculated according to weight and size. A BMI less than 18.5 translates thinness, while value between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal. Beyond that, a BMI located between 25 and 29.9 corresponds to overweight, and from 30, it is obesity. In addition, the association explains that we are also based on the measurement of the waist tower, an important indicator of the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular complications: a size tower exceeding 102 cm in men and 89 cm in women is considered worrying.
For the association of diabetics of the wilaya of Algiers, even light weight loss can improve health and reduce risks. But it insists mainly on the importance of prevention: awareness campaigns, nutritional education from school, promotion of sport and early screening. “If we do not act quickly, Algeria will have to face a real obesity epidemic, with a huge human and economic cost,” warns the organization.
She calls on public authorities, health professionals and families to work together to reverse the trend. She invites Algerians to consult a doctor from the first alert signs and adopt healthier habits: balanced diet, regular physical activity and suitable medical follow -up.
It should be noted that the latest figures put forward by the Ministry of Health indicate that 14% of men, 34% of women and 21% of young people suffer from obesity. A worrying situation that pushes the authorities to strengthen awareness campaigns and the regulation of food products.
However, according to the ministry, notable progress has been recorded this year, that of the consumption of sugars, fats and salt which decreased by almost 50% compared to the previous year, a sign of an increasing awareness of citizens.
