Algeria wants to boost the development of the Gara Djebilet iron mine. The country especially wants to rely on the Chinese expertise of the company China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC), which has reiterated its interest in investing in this strategic project. An Algerian-Chinese technical working group should be trained for this purpose.
The megaprojet of the Gara Djebilet iron mine should enter into operational phase with the introduction of the know-how of the Chinese company China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC).
This announced partnership should make it possible to meet the challenges faced by the development of this project, relating mainly to the reduction in the rate of phosphorus because the high content of ore phosphorus makes it difficult to use without prior treatment.
Received Thursday by the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sonarem group, a delegation from the company, led by the director general of MCC International, Jia Ningchuan, has renewed his interest in investing in the project, expressing his arrangement in establishing a roadmap to launch the preliminary tests and form a joint technical working group, the objective being to help to accelerate the realization of the strategic project of Gara Djeblet and Promote the development of the mining sector locally.
The CEO of the Sonarem group, Belkacem Soltani, who received this important delegation to the group’s headquarters, in the presence of the director general of the national iron and steel company Feral, Rédis Belhadj, stressed the importance of recourse to modern methods to reduce the rate of phosphorus and accelerate the realization of locally technical tests, through the creation of joint Algerian-Chinese working groups, project.
He also highlighted the important mining potential of Algeria, allowing him to meet the needs of national iron and steel factories and to move towards export to the future.
During this meeting, the two parties mentioned the means of cooperation in the project to develop Gara Djebilet iron ore deposits, in the wilaya of Tindouf, in particular with regard to the treatment of iron ore and the reduction of the level of phosphorus.
Much importance is given by the public authorities to the development of the Gara Djebilet iron mine, considered as one of the major levers of the economic transformation of Algeria.
This gigantic site, which contains more than 3.5 billion tonnes of iron ore, fully embodies the national ambition to diversify resources, strengthen economic sovereignty and provide Algeria with a competitive and integrated steel sector, capable of meeting both internal needs and requirements of external markets.
As a reminder, the first stone of the project to carry out a primary treatment plant of iron ore extracted from the Gara Djebilet mine was laid by the President of the Republic, at the end of November 2023. It should be noted that the realization of the primary treatment plant of iron ore extracted from the Gara Djebilet mine represents the largest mining investment in Algeria.
